Lady Bird. Greta Gerwig. 2017. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Reminded me of David Chase: naturalistic humor, complicated mother figure, says something about America, is real about how depression fucks a life up, & there's some serious care put into detail and specificity. Laurie Metcalf is F U C K I N G P H E N O M E N A L. There's a few small plotting issues I'd tweak, but I relate to this so heavily (Class of '03, baby!) I gotta 100% forgive such minor blips. ❤️❤️ ALSO I gotta add: this flips completely on its head the megacommon and nauseating trope of movies that are, at their heart, stories about the struggle of the artist/author. Which is to say, Lady Bird ultimately isn't about The Author finding herself or her bliss or her passion or whatever the fucking self-centered shit most stories like this are on about, it's about relating to and loving other people. That's really cool to me.
