Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Martin McDonagh. 2017. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I like McDonagh cuz he's 1 of the only directors who can get movies about hating yourself into the multiplex. Entire cast is [fire emoji], especially McDormand. Black comedy flourishes are superb. Rare movie where I never quite knew what was gonna happen next. The racial shit is GARBAGE and this would be a stone cold classic if it hadn't went there. blackness is the only "character trait" the black characters in this movie possess. it's fucked up and dumb. "but paul, why do you give this movie four stars, then?" you might ask. the answer is... via privilege i have the ability to look past this meritless aspect of the movie and am able to focus on the stuff about it which is meaningful to me... which is, this is an examination of extreme self-loathing, how self-destructive tendencies also destroy the world around you, etc. i don't see this as a redemption story that heroizes a racist cop. to my eyes, at no point in this movie is rockwell anything other than a delusional scumbag who gets off on hurting people.
