Mid90s. Jonah Hill. 2018. ⭐️⭐️
SO LAZY! More Pinterest Board than Film, this well-photographed/scored list of Cultural References should've put its energy into characters (each of them is allotted approximately one dimension) & story (there isn't one, just parts of one), cuz the cast is fucking solid. Mid90s so desperately wants to make a point, but the best moments are pointless, eg Skater Bois hassling a Rent-A-Cop & him dishing it right back.
Someone on Twitter pointed out the difference between the sex scene in Eighth Grade (older boy calls protagonist worthless garbage because she won't fuck him) and the sex scene in Mid90s (older girl guides protagonist through first sexual experience with an erotic kindness that grants protagonist Total Joy) cuts to the heart of Mid90s' central flaw, which is: it's total bullshit. I have my issues with Eighth Grade, but it at least attempts to navigate adolescent awkwardness as a site of ambiguous, conflicting, contradictory feelings. Mid90s is basically like "awesome stuff is awesome, bad stuff sucks."
