Superfly. Director X. 2018. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The slow build of shit getting more fucked for him from every direction was intense, brilliantly plotted. So it sucked when Priest's troubles got remedied with such ease. Otherwise.. loved the casting, 100% stellar performances. Director X kicks ass at getting great bang for buck, eg the chase scene. Visual vibe was excellent. Also amazing was the subtle riffing on race ** SPOILERS ** … the two most exemplary moments: 1) During the chase when Priest's girlfriend shoots out Q's windshield so he can't see and then he crashes into a confederate monument, a series of events that simultaneously causes Q to die and the monument to be destroyed. 2) During Priest's final fight, with the uniformed police officer who is white and male, basically like a cliché of a cop who terrorizes black men, when Priest takes the cop's baton out of the holster and starts beating the shit out of him with it, and it's this intense visual allusion to footage of the Rodney King beating. There were also a couple of interesting truth bombs: 1) “It doesn’t matter how smart you are when everything around you is stupid” 2) “You don’t always have to tell the truth. That’s not trust. You always doing right by me, me always doing right by you… that’s trust.” How delightful it is when regular-ass movies have a lot to say and say it with style and panache. Fuck yeah.
