If you’re a writer and you write a sentence that begins “If you’re a writer” and ends “something’s wrong” fuck yourself. Credit where credit’s due: “You don’t have to suffer for your art” is a good maxim. Fuck the rest.
There are many unwrong reasons self-expression might feel bad. Feeling bad is normal. I’m honestly tired of this popular notion that we should “love” our pursuits because they give our lives “purpose.” Another way we replicate capitalism in our thinking tbh. Don’t let anybody tell you you’re doing creativity wrong.
Processing feelings isn’t linear, there’s no “Pay attention to Issue X and Improvement Y will result in an Overall Improvement, congratulations!” Feeling bad about self-expression might be just what you need to shed light on some other shit. Feeling GREAT! about self-expression might be a thing where you’re nursing an unhealthy belief in the capacity of self-expression to make you whole.
My experience has been sometimes self-expression is boring, sometimes it isn’t. Diff people relate to creativity in diff ways, there isn’t a way, there isn’t a path, there is no wrong way, and even if you find yourself going down the wrong road, that’s an experience you learn from, it’s okay to fuck up.
If you never derive any pleasure, joy, amusement, inspiration, satisfaction, calm etc. from self-expression then that sucks and maybe re-evaluate your approach to creativity. But life is never all good, it’s never all bad, and any full-throated condemnation of struggling with self-expression is (in my opinion) bogus.
